How we approach fencing
Most fences fail at the post. A panel is only as strong as the posts holding it, and posts rot where they meet the ground or loosen in wet clay. We set posts at the right depth, in properly compacted concrete, and use concrete posts and gravel boards where the ground is wet so the timber never sits in soil.
Privacy fencing is what most south Dublin gardens want — a solid, neat boundary that blocks the view and lasts. On more exposed sites near the coast at Dún Laoghaire or Dalkey, solid panels can act like a sail and blow out in the first big wind, so we can fit wind-filtering slatted or hit-and-miss panels that let air through but still give privacy.
Heights matter for planning. As a general guide, side and rear fences up to 2 m and front boundaries up to 1.2 m are exempt from planning permission, but the exact rules depend on your address and the road. We confirm what applies to you before we build.

Frequently asked
How high can my fence be?
As a general guide, side and rear fences up to 2 m and front boundaries up to 1.2 m are exempt from planning permission, but exact rules can depend on your address and the road. We confirm what applies to your boundary before any work starts.
The fence is on a boundary — whose responsibility is it?
Boundary ownership varies and isn't always obvious. We can advise on your situation and help you agree the work with a neighbour where the fence is shared, including matching the height and finish on both sides.
How long does a timber fence last?
A well-built close-board fence on treated posts in compacted concrete can last fifteen years and more; concrete posts last considerably longer. Life depends on the timber grade, the ground and the exposure, all of which we get right at the build.
Our ground slopes — can you still fence it?
Yes. Stepped panels, raked close-boarding and gravel boards set to the slope all deal with falling ground cleanly. We set the posts to the levels so the fence follows the garden rather than fighting it.
