Lush ornamental palm trees, Japanese maple and layered shrub border planting in a Blackrock and Dublin South Side garden by Daniel O'Byrne.

How we approach planting

Good planting is about the right plant in the right place. A shrub that loves sun will sulk in shade; a plant that hates wet roots will fail in heavy clay. Daniel assesses your soil, light and exposure first, then chooses plants that will thrive in your Blackrock or Dublin South Side garden rather than fight it.

We plant in layers — evergreen structure that holds the garden through winter, perennials and grasses for the summer show, and bulbs to kick the year off in spring. Hedging gives privacy and shelter, while seasonal colour keeps the garden feeling fresh. Take a layer out and the garden looks thin for half the year.

Because Daniel is a horticulturalist, not just an installer, the planting is chosen to survive and mature, not just look full on day one. You get a plant list with every job: every name, every quantity, every position. Nothing vague, nothing left to chance.

Frequently asked

When is the best time to plant in Ireland?

Autumn and early spring are ideal — the soil is still warm and workable, and roots establish before the stress of summer drought or winter cold. Container plants can go in year-round if kept watered. We time planting to the season so it establishes well.

My soil is heavy clay — what can I plant?

Plenty. Many excellent garden plants thrive in clay once it's opened up with organic matter. Daniel selects for your exact soil and drainage rather than fighting it, and prepares the beds properly before planting.

Can you do low-maintenance planting?

Yes. Low maintenance is about the right plant choices and the right layout — fewer fussy plants, more structural evergreens and long-lived perennials, and a mulch regime. We design for the level of care you actually want to give it.

Will the planting attract wildlife?

It can — and most clients want it to. We can build in nectar-rich perennials, grasses for shelter, and berrying shrubs for birds, without it looking like a wild meadow. Good planting and a garden full of life aren't opposites.
