How we approach mulching
Mulch does three jobs at once. It holds moisture in the soil through dry spells, suppresses weeds so they never get going, and gives beds a neat, finished look. In our damp Irish climate it also keeps the soil surface from crusting and helps feed it as the organic matter breaks down.
We use bark and organic mulches suited to your beds — bark for shrub and perennial borders, and finer mulches where you want a more formal finish. Before mulching we clear the bed, edge it cleanly and feed if needed, so the mulch sits on a prepared surface rather than covering weeds and debris.
A mulch layer is best refreshed each year or two. Done properly it cuts your weeding dramatically and keeps roots cool and moist through the summer — a small job that makes a big difference to how the garden looks and how much work it is.

Frequently asked
How often should I mulch?
A good layer of bark mulch lasts about a year to eighteen months before it thins and breaks down. Most gardens benefit from a top-up each spring. We can set up a yearly mulch visit so the beds always look fresh and the weeds stay down.
Will mulch stop weeds completely?
A proper depth of mulch suppresses most annual weeds and makes any that do come through easy to pull. Persistent perennial weeds are cleared first, before mulching, so they don't grow through. Mulching dramatically cuts weeding, even if it doesn't end it entirely.
What's the best time of year to mulch?
Late winter to mid-spring is ideal — the soil is warming, weeds haven't got going, and the mulch locks in moisture for the growing season. An autumn mulch also works well to protect roots through winter. We mulch at the time that suits your garden.
Is bark mulch safe around plants?
Yes, when applied correctly. We keep mulch clear of plant stems and trunks so they don't rot, and lay it at an even depth. Bark mulch is one of the most reliable, plant-friendly finishes for Irish borders.
